Using Mimbo theme

7. Now for the front page spotlight image.

First of all, we need to upload the image and resize it to fit the template, then we input the image to the template using the ‘custom fields section.

Getting and preparing the image. The leading story images need to be sized at 269×178 px

- Click the new Image Manager icon in the toolbar to bring up the dialogs window. - Leave the ‘Directory’ at the default root setting, as this should be theme/images/ - If your image is not already on the server, use the browse button to find it locally - Click upload and wait till its showing the image thumbnail section (click refresh) - Hovering over the thumbnail will display its current size information. - Click the ‘pencil’ icon beneath the thumbnail to open the image editor window. - use the controls on the left to resize, crop, scale, rename, compress and save. - Refresh the dialogs page to see the new image. - Good, we now have the image ready to link to the custom field! - copy its name, or remember it. - Click ‘CANCEL’ in the dialog window, or you will insert this image into the post! - Scroll down the editor page and open the ‘Custom Field’ section - Where it says ‘Add a new custom field’ enter the word ‘Image’ with capital ‘I’ - If you have already done this once, simply use the select box and click ‘Image’ - In the value field enter the name of the image you just prepared, ie ’shop.jpg’ - Click ‘Add custom field’ you should now see it added in the update list. - Finally click ‘Publish’ to publish your post to the front page Leading story’ - Go check the front page to see!

8. Organization:

In your ImageManger dialog screen, you can create a sub-directory called ‘lead-story’ and other sub-directories for your other size specific images, such as features and categories, if this helps your organization of resources. All this can be done with ImageManger and no FTP access is required. (make sure you have server permissions to do this) If you use a sub-directory, in the ‘Custom Fields’ section you would need to prefix the directory name ‘/lead-story/shop.jpg’ for example, as the path to the images.

Great article on a great theme. I loved the Image Manager plugin which I guess has been somewhat superseded now we have the new Media Gallery (although still no way to file images neatly into folders)

If all that image resizing and custom field tagging is spoiling your enjoyment of MIMBO then you should check out the VIVA THUMBS plugin from Mediatricks. It takes the first image you upload (using WP Add Media - not Image Manager) and automatically thumbnails it on the fly to any size your theme needs.

It can also display a defautl category linked image if there is no image uploaded with a post.

The demo site has a fully working version you can login and test: http://www.mediatricks.biz/demo

Viva Thumbs makes Mimbo, Revolution, Unstandard and all the new ‘picture perfect’ themes a snap to administer.
