Database Preparation for the new site, if you are changing domain names

  1. Open your database locally. Only use a good text editor, not windows notepad!

  2. Make a Search and replace ‘old-domain/’ and replace it for ‘new-domain/’ This is an important step and it’s a good policy to check the replacements to make sure that the new domain name is being changed correctly.

  3. Save the file, without changing the extension!

Preparation for the new files.

  1. Open an installation archive of WordPress, using the same version as your exiting site.

  2. Over-write wp-content, replacing it with your existing site folder wp-content saved from FTP.

  3. Upload the whole archive to your new location

  4. Carry out a normal WordPress install for a new site.

  5. Login to admin and make your default site settings such as email and name.

At this point, you will have a normal installation with no content and displaying the default theme. No plugins with be activated. However, all the files for your theme, all the images and plugins will be ready on your server, because you have included them in your new installation in the archive upload.
